June 23, 2008 - We'll miss you Mac!
His enthusiasm for the band was was unmatched by most fans one half or even one quarter his age, so it was no surprise that when his family threw a big birthday bash for him, Hardwood was hired to play. Mac was a drummer himself in his younger days, playing swing in the big band era. I never saw him so happy as on his birthday when he got to sit in with the band on drums. He absolutely glowed.
One night Michael asked Mac to "...tell me something that will blow my mind." Mac replied that when he was about six years old and living in England, he and one of his playmates saw a German zeppelin flying overhead and started running along to follow it. Suddenly there were explosions going on all around. As he explained, he was a witness to the first ever aerial bombardment, which took place as World War I began.
Personally, I was never so amused as one night when I heard his children (who had to be in their seventies) plaintively asking "Dad, can't we go home now?" To which Mac responded "Not until the end of this set!" He then found another young lady to dance with (he was known to find plenty) and hit the dance floor, much to the "kids" chagrin.
